TSE: André Ramos Tavares votes for conviction and brings Bolsonaro closer to ineligibility

247 - The minister of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), André Ramos Tavares, voted on Thursday (June 29) for the conviction and ineligibility of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) due to the meeting with ambassadors in July 2022, during which he made false statements attacking electronic voting machines and the Brazilian electoral system. After Tavares' vote, the president of the TSE, Alexandre de Moraes, suspended the trial, which will resume on Friday (June 30) at 12 p.m.
The current score of the trial, as of the closing of this report, is 3-1 in favor of conviction. Minister Benedito Gonçalves, the rapporteur, was supported by ministers Floriano de Azevedo Marques and André Ramos Tavares. Minister Raul Araújo voted against ineligibility.
In his vote, Tavares stated that Bolsonaro's meeting with ambassadors had a purely "diplomatic guise." The minister also pointed out that Bolsonaro's statements were "divergent from reality, comprising a fabricated version and an alarmist strategy of false persuasion." The content of Bolsonaro's speech was "pervaded by false information" and constituted "unequivocal attacks" on political parties, candidates, Supreme Federal Court (STF) justices, and the TSE, according to Tavares.
The minister concluded that the event involved a "diversion of purpose, characterizing an abuse of power."
Furthermore, according to the judge, Bolsonaro's behavior had the potential to cause "harmful effects on democracy, the electoral process, and the public belief in conspiracies regarding the vote counting system."
