247 – The Brazilian ambassador in Washington, Maria Luiza Viotti, emphasizes that it is inevitable for Brazil and the United States to agree on all matters. Despite this, she highlights that both countries have a solid foundation of shared values such as democracy and human rights. Viotti, the first woman to lead the Brazilian Embassy in Washington, acknowledges that there is a significant convergence in these fundamental aspects.

In an interview with journalist Thiago Amâncio from Folha, the diplomat acknowledges that there may be frustration due to Brazil's divergent positions, such as regarding the Ukraine War and China. However, she affirms that Brazil maintains a position of neutrality in the current global order. Viotti highlights that it is natural for there to be differences on certain issues and emphasizes the importance of continuous dialogue between Brazil and the US to clarify the reasons behind their respective positions. "Brazil condemned the Russian invasion, as it could not be otherwise. But at the same time, we made an appeal for peace. President Lula has strongly insisted on the idea of negotiations. We Brazilians have great confidence in dialogue, in the peaceful resolution of conflicts," she said. "This has indeed caused some dissatisfaction here because at this moment the US is heavily involved in supporting Ukraine. What is important is that there is always a dialogue between Brazil and the US so that the reasons behind each side's positions can be clarified," she added.

During the visit of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to the United States, the Biden administration expressed confidence in Brazilian democracy and rejected any kind of anti-democratic interruption. However, there were disagreements regarding Lula's statements that were not aligned with US positions, especially regarding the Ukraine War and China. Nevertheless, Viotti emphasizes that the relationship between the two countries is based on friendship and trust, something that was evident during the Brazilian president's visit.

The ambassador also addresses the US's role during Brazilian elections, highlighting that the events that occurred in Brazil, such as the invasion of the Three Powers headquarters, bear similarities to the attack on the Capitol in the United States. She emphasizes that both Brazil and the US are concerned about strengthening democracy and institutions, and that cooperation to strengthen these aspects will continue to be a priority in the bilateral agenda.

Viotti acknowledges that Brazil has adopted a position of neutrality towards countries such as China and Russia, seeking a balance. She highlights that dialogue and peaceful conflict resolution are values that Brazilians trust. The ambassador also comments on the importance of observing the electoral process in the United States because the relations between Brazil and the US will continue to be based on state-to-state relations, regardless of the president's orientation.
